The work is in three movements: a large, joyful Allegro which grows out of a lyric melody for the cellos; a short Intermezzo in which “poetic expression flowers gracefully and sinuously in both expected and unexpected melodic directions”; and a Theme and Derivations whose rhythmic drive brings the symphony to “an exhilarating conclusion.”
