“…completely holds the interest…delicately and strangely beautiful, with a strong and sure pulling together of strands.”

“To a degree that few modern American works equal, it held its own in a program with music by Beethoven and Smetana. Mechem is no musical faddist. While his music is clearly contemporary, he never hops onto any current bandwagon of stunts and sensations. His quartet speaks from his own mature feelings and with an equally mature ability…The quartet develops personal ideas on a large cohesive scale… searches sharply and deeply without sentimentality.”
